Is the Kintetsu Rail Pass worth it for Nara and Yoshino from Osaka?
It makes no difference to the price. Those journeys cost ¥3,700 either way, and the Kintetsu Rail Pass (2 days) costs exactly the same. Buy the pass only if you might add another journey; otherwise ordinary tickets are simpler.

Does the Kintetsu Rail Pass cover buses in Nara?
The 1 day, 2 day and 5 day plus passes cover Nara Kotsu buses within designated zones — Nara Park, Nishinokyo, Horyuji, Asuka, Muro and Yamanobe-no-michi. The 5 day pass does not; it is rail only. This calculator prices rail travel alone, so if your days involve a lot of local bus travel the pass is worth more than the figure here suggests.
Does the JR Kansai Area Pass cover the shinkansen?
No. The JR Kansai Area Pass is valid on local, rapid and special rapid services within the Kansai area, and does not cover shinkansen travel.
Can one pass cover both JR and Kintetsu trains to Nara?
No. JR and Kintetsu are separate companies running separate lines to separate stations in Nara. A JR pass is not valid on Kintetsu and a Kintetsu pass is not valid on JR, so an itinerary mixing both often costs less with ordinary tickets than with either pass.
Which station is closer to Nara Park, JR Nara or Kintetsu-Nara?
Kintetsu-Nara is closer — the station exit is minutes from the western edge of Nara Park, while JR Nara sits further west and is usually a longer walk or a short bus ride. The exact minutes on our route comparison are our own estimates and have not been timed on the ground.
How this calculator works
Every pass is compared the same way. We add up what your selected journeys cost as individual tickets, then for each pass we take the pass price and add the fares that pass does not cover. A Kintetsu pass does not cover JR trains, and a JR pass does not cover Kintetsu trains, so mixed itineraries often beat both.
Passes valid for fewer days than your trip are excluded rather than guessed at, because whether they work depends on which journeys fall on which day. If a shorter pass is excluded and you think it might fit, run the calculator again with only the journeys from those days.
Two things that catch people out
Limited express trains cost extra on Kintetsu
The Kintetsu Rail Pass covers the fare but not the limited express surcharge. If you want the reserved, faster train to Yoshino or Ise you pay that on top. The ordinary express trains are covered and are only a little slower on the Nara route.
Nara has two different stations
Kintetsu-Nara sits a few minutes' walk from Nara Park. JR Nara is roughly twenty minutes' walk further west, or a short bus ride. If you are coming for the deer and Todaiji, arriving at Kintetsu-Nara saves you that walk — which sometimes justifies a slightly higher fare from Kyoto.
