Getting there
Kyoto or Osaka to Nara: JR or Kintetsu?
Two companies run to Nara, to two different stations, twenty minutes' walk apart. Almost every English guide names one and moves on. The fares are close enough that the walk at the far end decides it — so here is every route with both halves of the journey.
From Kyoto
It depends on which you care about. JR is cheaper at ¥720 against ¥760, but Kintetsu puts you at Nara (Kintetsu), about 50 minutes door to park against 65 — because Nara (JR) is a further 20 minute walk.

The thing nobody tells you
Nara has two main stations and they are not next to each other. 近鉄奈良駅 (Kintetsu-Nara) sits about 5 minutes from the edge of Nara Park. JR奈良駅 (JR Nara) is roughly 20 minutes further out.
That gap is larger than the fare difference on every route on this page. If you are carrying luggage, travelling with children, or arriving late, it is the only variable that really matters. A rail pass that saves you a couple of hundred yen and lands you at the wrong station has not done you a favour.
| Station | Operator | To Nara Park | To Todaiji | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nara (Kintetsu) 近鉄奈良駅 | Kintetsu | 5 min | 15 min | Closer in. The station exit puts you on the edge of the park almost immediately. |
| Nara (JR) JR奈良駅 | JR | 20 min | 30 min | Further west. There is a frequent bus from outside the station, and the walk is flat but unremarkable. |
