Whose photographs these are

None of them are ours. Every picture on this site is reused from Wikimedia Commons under the licence recorded here, and every one is on a list to be replaced by a photograph we have taken ourselves.

What we did to them. None of these are our photographs. Every one is reused from Wikimedia Commons under the licence recorded against it, with the photographer named on the page it appears on and again on /credits/. We resize and re-encode for the web, which is format shifting rather than adaptation, and change nothing else. When we have been somewhere ourselves, our own photograph replaces the borrowed one and this record is removed.

The photographs

The order we will replace them

Ordered by how easily we can take the picture ourselves. The Nara Park subjects can be photographed on any day of the year and should go first; Mount Yoshino in blossom is available for roughly two weeks each April, so that one stays borrowed the longest and is the honest exception.

  1. A sika deer standing on grass in Nara Park — any day
  2. A stack of shika senbei — any day
  3. The Great Buddha Hall of Todai-ji — any day
  4. Rows of moss covered stone lanterns lining an approach at Kasuga Taisha in Nara. — any day
  5. Mount Yoshino in full bloom — about two weeks each April

If one of these is yours

If you took one of these and the credit is wrong, or you would rather it were not here at all, say so and it comes down the same day. The licences allow the reuse, but that is not the same as wanting it.
